Mafiosi in the Sicilian diocese of Acireale will not be allowed to have Christian burials from now on, following a decree by Bishop Antonino Raspanti, who has been prominent in stepping up the church’s anti-mafia stance in the homeland of the feared organization.

“Being a Christian is incompatible with having links to Mafia organizations,” he said.

The move, which should probably be copied Italy-wide, comes a month after the beatification of the Rev. Pino Puglisi, who was murdered by gangsters in 1993 for his fiery anti-mafia preaching.
